How Firewalls work

Firewalls control how traffic flows to and from your server. It can control rates of flows as well as block or allow certain types of traffic, depending on its ip, port, etc.

Everyone needs a firewall! If you have a server on the internet, it is exposed to a dangerous world. The more you lock it down, the better you can sleep at night knowing that it would be very difficult for an attacker to get into your server.

The typical firewall blocks inbound connections. For example, if you have a Linux server, you can use a firewall to block all inbound ssh connections except for those from your specified ip addresses!
